El Camino

Our hiking adventures started many years ago with short day trips in and around San Diego County. Soon we were taking yearly trips to the Grand Canyon and Mount Whitney (the highest point in the "lower 48" states.

Mt. Whitney

In 1995, along with a group of our friends, we traveled to Africa and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. The following year we headed to Argentina and hiked to the base camp of Mount Aconcagua in the Andes.

Mt. Kilimanjaro

In 1998, after reading an article in the travel section of the newspaper about the Camino de Santiago, we both became hooked on the idea of making the trek. We continued our yearly trips to the Grand Canyon and Mount Whitney, mixed with other new hikes in California and Arizona.
As retirement closed in on us the Camino trip became a reality. On August 27, 2003, we set out from St. Jean Pied de Port, France. Thirty-seven days and over 500 miles later we walked into the Cathedral Plaza at Santiago de Compostela

Santiago

In the Spring of 2005 we returned to the Camino. We walked parts of the trail including the last 100 km. and were "tourist" in other sections seeing all of the interesting sights that we had walked past on our first trip.

Without a doubt, our hike along the Camino was the most fascinating and interesting adventure we have experienced in our lives. It is our hope that in reading Buen Camino-Hiking the Camino de Santiago and El Camino de Santiago-A Pictorial Pilgrimage you can share in that adventure
